Breast Cancer, Mammograms, etc.
Recently you may have heard that there’s been a fairly politicized spat going on between political parties regarding mammograms - when to have them, when not to have them, etc. The fact that all this has been happening in the context of the health care debate is even more sad. The truth is that to have or have mammograms is not the question. The question that citizens should be asking is, “Since when did breast cancer become an accepted inevitability?”
The war on cancer started with Nixon and unfortunately has been about as effective as the war on drugs. I realize prevention is never as sexy as a new cure, however, it’s important to note that there is no “cure” for cancer, heart disease or diabetes - only temporary fixes. As a culture, we’ve come to believe that you can eat hamburgers, hotdogs and fries and still be rescued from chronic illness by a magic pill, procedure or therapy. It doesn’t work that way. Everything you put in your mouth - every day, makes a difference. If you decide to eat excess meat, dairy, sugar and processed foods, you will end up with a chronic illness such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer or a myriad of others, guaranteed.
When you choose whole foods - i.e. foods that exist without being processed or the need for packaging or a box, something great happens. You can eat as much as you want, feel incredible, not get fat, and be free from 90% of the illnesses that most people suffer; you can certainly prevent and in many cases rid yourself of chronic illness.
So when you begin to hear the healthcare debate drone on and on, remember, the real issue that we should be focusing on is: how our poor American diet based on inexpensive animal products and processed grain in a box is literally killing us and driving our country into bankruptcy.
